A car's cooling system is made up of many pieces that all contribute to the overall performance and reliability of the vehicle. The cooling system consists of: the radiator and cooling fans, pressure cap and reserve tank, water pump, thermostat, bypass system, freeze plugs, head gaskets, heater core, and hoses, Coolant circulates through all of these parts so they don't get too hot and can continue to work properly.

Coolant is an amazingly versatile liquid, it is able to not only withstand extreme heat and pressure but also has the ability to take below freezing temperatures without solidifying. The job of the cooling system is to regulate engine temperature in order to protect the engine components from overheating. The typical car engine runs between 198 and 220 degrees Fahrenheit. When coolant gets old it begins to lose some of its protective properties, which can cause serious damage and corrosion to the engine. Proper maintenance of this system is important if you don't want to be stuck on the side of the highway with an overheated engine due to a preventable cooling system failure.

Signs of a Cooling System Problem:

  • Coolant light comes on
  • Temperature gauge is higher or lower than normal
  • Heater stops working
  • Coolant leak- orange, pink, or green fluid puddle
  • Poor gas mileage
  • Sweet smell
  • Steam or sudden film on the inside of the windshield

Did You Know?

The cooling system is made up of many different hoses and clamps, the best way to check for degradation of a coolant hose is to squeeze the hose near the clamps/connectors using the following steps:

  1. ALWAYS make sure the engine is cool before inspecting the cooling system.
  2. Use your fingers and thumb to check for hose weakness.
  3. Squeeze near the clamps or connectors as this is where most failures occur.
  4. Check for a noticeable difference in feel between the middle and ends of the hose.
  5. If the ends feel soft, spongy, or mushy replacement is needed.
