The Life of Your Car's Battery

Chances are, at one point or another you have gone out to your vehicle and only to realize that it won't start. Most car batteries can last anywhere between 3 and 5 years. However, the life of your battery can depend o multiple factors including weather conditions and how you treat your car. The most important factor in determining the length of your battery's life is definitely the temperature of where you live and store you vehicle, whether that's in Englewood, Denver, or somewhere else in Colorado.

Batteries in cold temperatures have a life expectancy of over 50 months compared to only 30 months in hot climates because the chemicals inside of batteries become more active in hooter temperatures. A car battery will start to 'discharge' after a couple of really hot days- eventually it will start to die. Simply recharging a discharged battery does not bring the dead parts back to life. The alternator in the car recharges the battery once the car has been running for awhile, but running quick errands on a hot day does not give the alternator enough time to recharge the battery. The last thing you want is to be stranded on a blistering hot and dry Colorado day in a parking lot because your battery died.

The car's battery main function is to start the car. However, as auto technology advances, the batteries are having to pick up the slack with charging the built in navigation systems, blue-tooth phone adapters, seat heaters, DVD players,  and other electrical components of the vehicle. All of these electrical systems functioning at once can also discharge the battery. To keep your battery functioning at its best it should be charged once a month during those sweltering Colorado summers and once every three months during the rest of the year.

TIP: If you find yourself in a situation where it is possible to jump start your car's battery make sure to inspect it before doing so. If the battery is leaking, cracked, frozen or swelled it is important not to jump start it as this can be dangerous. Damaged batteries can combust or even explode when jumped.
